Where I work, my personality is all wrong for director or executive level. They want rule enforcers who at least publicly 100% support all executive committee goals and plans. That’s not me. While I’d never bash the company in public (grounds for termination if nothing else), I won’t keep silent in meetings of peers or peers and higher ups.

I’m much better at mentoring and training than “managing.” My employer says I don’t hands on supervise staff enough. From their perspective, I can’t argue that point — it’s what they want to see promotion job. My staff over the years have all made out well though in that every one has moved on from me to much higher level jobs at other companies.
